Conflict Resolution (Group Project)
Conflict Resolution (Group Project)
For our HCI Foundations course, my team decided to design a solution to help people address interpersonal conflicts.
Research Methods
User Interviews
I personally conducted 3 user interviews. The goal of the interviews was to learn about the interviewees experiences of and attitudes toward conflict. I also wanted to understand what steps they take when attempting to resolve interpersonal issues that they face.
The questions that turned out to be most impactful were:
Describe the last time you were in conflict with a friend. How did it feel, and how you handle it?
While in an argument, how do you decide whether to back down or stand your ground?
What did you think about the opposing opinion?
After conducting 8 user interviews, my team and I created an affinity map using the interpretations and insights collected.
Design
After brainstorming over 80 ideas together, we each sketched out 2 or 3 of our most innovative and interesting solutions.
My second design came from a similar idea: “a countdown where you set a date for the confrontation and if you don’t do it by then your credit card gets charged.”
My sketches represent setting up the daily charge through a chat bot, connection with Apple Pay, home screen notifications to remind the user of the charge and challenge, a dashboard that shows the countdown to the next charge along with the total transaction history, and an option to provide proof of challenge completion.
My first design came from the idea “An app where you put money into a pot and if you resolve the conflict by a set date than you get all the money in the pot, but otherwise the money is distributed to all of the other people that put money in”
My sketches represent the pot of money along with the total amount, the guest invited to partake in the stakes, tips and tricks for dealing with confrontation, a way to upload proof that the confrontation took place, an area to chat about the challenge, and more! One feature that I tweaked from the original idea was that the only person putting money into this endeavor is the initiator. They then can invite their friends to benefit, in the case that they fail. I chose to change this because it puts pressure on only the main user, rather than the friends who have very little control over the outcome.
